No. You are welcome to come to any class that suits your schedule each week, and your training days can change from week to week. There is no need to book or commit to particular days; simply attend when it works for you.
Our minimum starting age is 4 years old. Some younger children are not quite ready for the group training environment yet.
If that is the case, we will let you know politely and you are very welcome to bring your child back to try again after a few months.
No. We offer one free trial per person.
Any comfortable t-shirt and shorts (or leggings) are perfect. Please wear shoes or thongs until you are on the mats (kids too), and bring a water bottle. Otherwise, no other special gear or equipment is needed.
You or your child don’t need anything specific for the free trial class! Just wear comfortable clothing you can move freely in, like a regular t-shirt and shorts (or leggings), and bring a water bottle.
If you or your child enjoy it and decide to join our program, coaches will happily chat with you about uniforms. They’re optional, and cost around $66.
No uniform is needed to start. Once your child decides to continue, an optional Tohkon Ryu uniform costs about $66.
No. To ensure all members are invested in the health and safety of their training partners, we do not offer casual sessions or drop-ins. If you would like to try a class, book a free trial online and come along.
You are welcome to stop by and watch anytime. To join in for a free trial, book online in a minute or book a quick call with us, both on this page. Booking first makes sure we have space to give you or your child full attention on the day.
Absolutely. Our classes are designed for all fitness and experience levels, from complete beginners to advanced students. We accommodate all techniques to varying ability and fitness levels. As we have a strong focus on self defence, we ensure that whatever techniques we teach you are something that is achievable for yourself if you may ever need to use these skills. Don't ever let being "unfit" or "too old" stop you.
Safety is our top priority. Our coaches work hard to create a safe and supportive training environment and prioritise a gym culture of safe and controlled training.
That said, martial arts is a combat sport and, while we do everything possible to prevent injuries, occasional bumps and bruises can happen. If you or your child have an existing injury, please let your coach know so we can adjust training accordingly.
Yes. Tohkon Ryu accepts Queensland FairPlay vouchers (also called Play On vouchers). Once you are signed up, email your FairPlay voucher to admin@tohkonryu.com and we will credit it to your membership.
Important: we cannot accept a FairPlay voucher until you have made your first payment with your nominated payment method and we have that payment method on file. Vouchers can only be used for training fees, not merchandise or other costs.
No. You can pause or cancel anytime. No long-term commitment required.
Besides regular training fees, the only additional costs are optional uniforms (approximately $66) and belt promotions (gradings). Uniforms are not required, students are welcome to train in regular clothes, and we recommend attending a few classes first to make sure you or your child enjoy it before buying a uniform (Gi). Belt gradings are merit-based, and happen when the coaches see that you or your child are ready. Gradings involve a small fee. As a registered club of the Australian Ju Jitsu Association, your annual association membership is included with enrolment.
We understand pause limits can be annoying when life gets busy. The reason is when too many memberships are paused at once, we lose an accurate picture of how many people are actively training, and that figure is what we use to determine how many coaches we roster on (and which coaches). This matters most in our junior classes, where maintaining the right coach-to-student ratio is essential. The limit isn't designed to trap anyone. If you ever need a longer break, you're welcome to cancel at any time.
When you pause your membership, you choose the date you'd like to come back. You can pause in whole weeks, from 1 week at a time, and you can use up to 12 weeks in total in any rolling 12-month period.
When your pause starts, we calculate exactly how many days are left in your current billing period and set that aside as a credit. You won't be charged for time you're not training.
When your membership resumes, that credit is automatically applied to your next payment. If you come back partway through a billing period, you're only charged for the days from your return date to your next billing date; and your credit is taken off that amount. Your regular billing date stays the same throughout.
For example: Say you pay $100 every fortnight, with billing dates on the 1st and 15th of each month. You pause on the 10th, with 5 days left in your cycle. Because you already paid for those 5 days but won't be training, you receive a $35.71 credit. You come back on the 23rd, which leaves 6 days until your next billing date on the 29th. Your $35.71 credit is applied against the $42.86 owed for those 6 days of active membership, so your payment on the 29th is $7.15 instead of the usual $100. From the 29th onwards, you're back to your normal $100 every fortnight.
Important notes:
1. Your 12 weeks is a rolling allowance. We look back over the last 12 months and add up the pause you have already used. You're still welcome to cancel your account (Please note: accounts must be up to date and paid to be cancelled)
2. Attending a class while your membership is paused automatically resumes billing from that day
There are two common reasons. Your account may have an overdue payment, as pause and cancel options are hidden while a payment is outstanding. Or you may have used your full pause allowance, which is 12 weeks in any rolling 12-month period. If you have used all 12 weeks, you will need to wait until some of that time falls outside the last 12 months.
If neither of these applies to you, please email us and we will take a look.
No. Pauses apply to each individual membership. If you have more than one child enrolled, each membership must be paused separately by selecting their profile on the "Select an Account" page in the app.
As soon as you sign up. After signing up, you'll get an email with information about our member app, where you can change your billing date anytime.
No. We only offer fortnightly payments. If you would like to pay upfront, please email admin@tohkonryu.com. Upfront payments require a minimum 12-month payment.
You can change your billing date yourself at any time in the member app at https://app.tohkonryu.com. If you get stuck, email admin@tohkonryu.com and we will change it for you.
Yes. We offer family discounts for families with three or more students enrolled at the same time. Please email admin@tohkonryu.com to apply.
Our payment processor retries the charge automatically. Update your card in the member app at https://app.tohkonryu.com and the next retry will go through. If payments keep failing the account falls into arrears, and pause and cancel options are hidden until it is paid up.
Our minimum pause period is 1 week regardless of your membership type.
You can upgrade or downgrade your membership at any time using our member app at: https://app.tohkonryu.com/
You can pause for up to 12 weeks in total in any rolling 12-month period. If you need a longer break than that, we recommend cancelling your membership. Before you do, keep in mind that rejoining later means paying the sign-up fee again and losing any credits, coupons or legacy rates on your account.
You can pause or cancel your membership at any time using our member app at: https://app.tohkonryu.com/ If you cannot use the app, email admin@tohkonryu.com (30 days' notice applies to email requests).
No. While your membership is paused or after you cancel, it is inactive and training is not permitted. Attending a class while paused or after cancelling automatically resumes billing from that day.
Open the member app, go to Billing, and update your payment method.

Accounts can be paused for up to 12 weeks in total in any rolling 12-month period. You can take that as one long break or split it across several shorter pauses, and there is no waiting period in between. Pauses are booked in whole weeks, with a minimum of one week.
You are always welcome to cancel if the pause terms do not suit you. Please note that if you cancel and later rejoin, you will need to pay the sign-up fee again. You will also lose any credits or coupons on your account, along with any founding member or legacy rates you were on.
Attending a class while your membership is paused or after cancelling automatically resumes billing from that day.
Fees stay the same whether you attend or not. Classes and training fees will not be refunded or credited retroactively, regardless of attendance.
Memberships are not automatically paused, credited or refunded for classes missed due to public holidays, gym closures, scheduling changes or other temporary closure events. This includes members on one class per week enrolments. If a closure or public holiday falls on your usual training day, you are welcome to attend any other class that week, or make up the missed class the week after; we will not issue refunds or credits in these situations.
In rare circumstances where classes are cancelled due to weather, safety concerns, competitions or other factors outside our control, classes are not refunded and memberships remain active as normal. In these situations we will give notice as soon as practicable by email and/or our official social media channels (Instagram and Facebook).
Cancelling forfeits previous member rates, training credits and any joining fees paid.
Members who fall into arrears and fail to respond to missed payment correspondence (emails and/or calls) may be permanently banned from our facility.
If your nominated payment method fails, our payment processor will automatically re-attempt to charge it. Keep your payment details current in the member app at https://app.tohkonryu.com to avoid a failed payment leading to arrears.
Members can pause or cancel their membership at any time using our member app at app.tohkonryu.com (immediate, no notice required) or by emailing admin@tohkonryu.com (with 30 days' notice).
There is a 30-day notice period for all membership pauses, cancellations and changes requested by email, although the gym may complete requests earlier at its discretion. Changes made in the member app take effect immediately, so we recommend using the app.
The member app at app.tohkonryu.com is the official channel for membership changes, including pauses, cancellations and billing date changes. For anything the app cannot do, email to admin@tohkonryu.com is the official and monitored support channel for all questions, concerns and requests; membership changes requested by email are subject to the notice period above. Phone calls, text messages, voicemail, social media messages and requests made to staff in person are not official channels and may not receive a response.
Payments must be up to date in order to make any changes to an account, including pausing or cancelling it.
The minimum pause period is 1 week regardless of membership type.
It is the member's responsibility to ensure they are using the correct email address and to stay up to date with any changes to our official contact details. Refunds or credits will not be issued if requests are sent to the wrong address. Our email address will always be available at the bottom of our website.
Log in to the Member App. Click Manage Your Account, select the student you would like to update, then click Edit Details to make changes.
Straight away. Once you have signed up, you can start at the next class that suits you. Kids classes run in school terms, so if you sign up during the holidays your child's first class will be in the first week of term.
Most membership changes, including pauses, cancellations and billing date changes, can be completed yourself in the member app, and answers to common questions can be found on our Help and House Rules page.
If you need help with anything the app cannot do, please email us at admin@tohkonryu.com. We usually respond within 24 hours. Email is our official, monitored support channel for all questions, concerns and requests. This ensures we can assist you as quickly as possible and make sure nothing gets missed.
Phone calls, text messages, voicemail, social media messages and requests made to staff in person are not official channels and may not receive a response.
This is because email:
- Can be seen by the whole team to assist you as fast as possible
- Works even if phone numbers change or staff are travelling so we don’t miss anything
- Allows us to respond to you early in the morning or late at night, for faster responses
Thank you for understanding!

Continued participation at Tohkon Ryu is conditional on students (children and adults) being able to train safely, respectfully, and appropriately within a group environment. If a child or adult's behaviour consistently creates safety risks, significantly disrupts classes, or negatively impacts other students' learning or wellbeing, we may determine that our program is not the right fit for them. In these cases, we reserve the right to suspend or terminate enrolment, with or without notice, at our discretion.
Creating a safe-to-fail, positive, and pressure-free training environment is extremely important to us. Getting good takes a lot of losing, and we want every student and child to feel completely safe making mistakes. For this reason, filming sparring or rolling is strictly prohibited without prior permission from both a coach and your training partner. Separate permission must also be obtained from both parties before posting any footage online.
By enrolling, you acknowledge that martial arts is a contact sport and accept the inherent risks of training.
Members must not train if they have any suspected skin condition or infection (including staph or ringworm), or if they are unwell. Training may only resume once cleared by a medical professional. We cannot issue refunds for training periods missed due to medical issues retroactively. However, you are still welcome to pause or cancel your account.
All cuts, grazes, and open wounds must be fully covered before training.
Members are responsible for bringing their own hygiene items, including nail clippers, bandages, and sports tape. Tohkon Ryu will not provide or lend these items.
Remove all jewellery, watches, piercings and hard accessories before training, including rings, earrings and necklaces.
Shoes are not permitted on the mats. Please wear shoes when entering the gym and when off the mats. If you arrive without shoes, you may not be permitted to train until your feet are cleaned.
Training without a shirt is not permitted unless specifically approved by a coach for competition preparation.
Being late occasionally is fine: warm up quietly and join in. Coaches will not repeat material that has already been taught for late-arriving students, as this takes time away from students who arrived on time. If you consistently arrive late, we may ask you to reassess whether the timetable suits you and whether we are the right gym for you.
Do not interrupt coaches while they are teaching. If you have a question, wait for a break in instruction.
Please keep off-the-mat conversations to a whisper while a class is running, and do not talk over coaches who are teaching.
Adults are expected to use appropriate language and conversation topics when children are present in the facility, especially around junior class times.
Members and parents are responsible for any damage caused by themselves or their children to the facility or equipment.
All lost items are placed in the lost property bin, which is emptied at the end of each calendar month. Please do not contact coaches or the gym to look for or set aside items.
We support competition pathways. If you would like to compete, talk to the coaches first and they will guide your next steps. Do not register yourself, or your child, for any competition without checking with coaching staff first. Registering for a competition without checking with the coaches first will result in immediate cancellation of membership.
Trial equipment is available for new students and may be used for 4 weeks after joining. After this period, you are expected to have your own gear. The Tohkon Ryu uniform itself is optional and costs about $66; the coaches can tell you where to get it.
Take phone calls outside the training area or out of earshot of any running class.
Fingernails and toenails must be kept trimmed, long hair tied back, and all training gear clean, hygienic and odour-free.
Sometimes, yes. We'll usually consider it if your child is close to the age cut-off and has been training in the younger group for at least 2 years.
Part of the terms you agree to when enrolling a child.
Coaching, yelling out or giving technical advice from the sidelines is strictly prohibited. If you have tips or feedback, please share them during water breaks only. Instructors are trained by management to never allow parents to yell out advice or coach from the sidelines. If instructors have to remind a parent a few times, that parent will receive one official warning via email. Any further breaches will result in immediate and permanent membership termination, without exception. We have seen over-zealous sideline coaching make training very uncomfortable for juniors and seriously damage their confidence, hence the strict rules around this subject.
We appreciate your support and encouragement! However, to help students stay focused, please save all cheering, encouragement, and positive feedback for water breaks only.
Except in the case of a potentially serious injury (which is extremely rare), please do not step onto the mats. Coaches will bring your child to you if they are hurt during class. As children progress in the program and build resilience, coaches will, where appropriate for the child's level, start to encourage them to work through minor bumps and bruises independently, without the need for parental comfort or support.
This is deliberate, and part of helping students build confidence, and resilience. We can completely understand there may be parents who prefer to step in immediately for minor discomforts or injuries. However, our program may not align with those values, as we have found this can undermine the development of confidence, resilience, and independence in our students.
Dropping children off without prior permission from a coach is strictly prohibited. This permission may be revoked at any time if we feel a child requires parental support. We will contact you if this occurs.
We love seeing parents who want to train with their kids! However, please do not teach your child techniques unless you have trained extensively. We have had situations where parents taught their children moves they saw online that were incorrect, not allowed, or even illegal, which can be extremely unsafe.
If you or your child have any concerns regarding behaviour, safety, or interactions at training, please contact us as soon as possible via email only. All concerns are taken very seriously. Parents and carers must not approach or discuss concerns directly with other students or their parents/carers. Please also be mindful of how you speak about other children in the class when discussing training with your child.
For safety and comfort, children must wear appropriate training clothing that provides full coverage during movement. E.g. Students who may be training in a school uniform with a skirt should wear bike shorts or leggings underneath.
For student safety, children not participating in the current class must be supervised at all times, and must remain calm, quiet, and seated within direct eyesight of their parent, so instructors can give their full focus to students on the mat.
No students on the mat before class until they are invited on by instructors.
