Getting started

Trials, your first class, gear, what to expect.

No. You are welcome to come to any class that suits your schedule each week, and your training days can change from week to week. There is no need to book or commit to particular days; simply attend when it works for you.

Our minimum starting age is 4 years old. Some younger children are not quite ready for the group training environment yet.

If that is the case, we will let you know politely and you are very welcome to bring your child back to try again after a few months.

No. We offer one free trial per person.

Any comfortable t-shirt and shorts (or leggings) are perfect. Please wear shoes or thongs until you are on the mats (kids too), and bring a water bottle. Otherwise, no other special gear or equipment is needed.

You or your child don’t need anything specific for the free trial class! Just wear comfortable clothing you can move freely in, like a regular t-shirt and shorts (or leggings), and bring a water bottle.

If you or your child enjoy it and decide to join our program, coaches will happily chat with you about uniforms. They’re optional, and cost around $66.

No uniform is needed to start. Once your child decides to continue, an optional Tohkon Ryu uniform costs about $66.

No. To ensure all members are invested in the health and safety of their training partners, we do not offer casual sessions or drop-ins. If you would like to try a class, book a free trial online and come along.

You are welcome to stop by and watch anytime. To join in for a free trial, book online in a minute or book a quick call with us, both on this page. Booking first makes sure we have space to give you or your child full attention on the day.

Absolutely. Our classes are designed for all fitness and experience levels, from complete beginners to advanced students. We accommodate all techniques to varying ability and fitness levels. As we have a strong focus on self defence, we ensure that whatever techniques we teach you are something that is achievable for yourself if you may ever need to use these skills. Don't ever let being "unfit" or "too old" stop you.

Safety is our top priority. Our coaches work hard to create a safe and supportive training environment and prioritise a gym culture of safe and controlled training.

That said, martial arts is a combat sport and, while we do everything possible to prevent injuries, occasional bumps and bruises can happen. If you or your child have an existing injury, please let your coach know so we can adjust training accordingly.

Yes. Tohkon Ryu accepts Queensland FairPlay vouchers (also called Play On vouchers). Once you are signed up, email your FairPlay voucher to admin@tohkonryu.com and we will credit it to your membership.

Important: we cannot accept a FairPlay voucher until you have made your first payment with your nominated payment method and we have that payment method on file. Vouchers can only be used for training fees, not merchandise or other costs.

No. You can pause or cancel anytime. No long-term commitment required.

Besides regular training fees, the only additional costs are optional uniforms (approximately $66) and belt promotions (gradings). Uniforms are not required, students are welcome to train in regular clothes, and we recommend attending a few classes first to make sure you or your child enjoy it before buying a uniform (Gi). Belt gradings are merit-based, and happen when the coaches see that you or your child are ready. Gradings involve a small fee. As a registered club of the Australian Ju Jitsu Association, your annual association membership is included with enrolment.

Billing & account

Payments, pauses, cancellations, changes to your account.

We understand pause limits can be annoying when life gets busy. The reason is when too many memberships are paused at once, we lose an accurate picture of how many people are actively training, and that figure is what we use to determine how many coaches we roster on (and which coaches). This matters most in our junior classes, where maintaining the right coach-to-student ratio is essential. The limit isn't designed to trap anyone. If you ever need a longer break, you're welcome to cancel at any time.

When you pause your membership, you choose the date you'd like to come back. You can pause in whole weeks, from 1 week at a time, and you can use up to 12 weeks in total in any rolling 12-month period.

When your pause starts, we calculate exactly how many days are left in your current billing period and set that aside as a credit. You won't be charged for time you're not training.

When your membership resumes, that credit is automatically applied to your next payment. If you come back partway through a billing period, you're only charged for the days from your return date to your next billing date; and your credit is taken off that amount. Your regular billing date stays the same throughout.

For example: Say you pay $100 every fortnight, with billing dates on the 1st and 15th of each month. You pause on the 10th, with 5 days left in your cycle. Because you already paid for those 5 days but won't be training, you receive a $35.71 credit. You come back on the 23rd, which leaves 6 days until your next billing date on the 29th. Your $35.71 credit is applied against the $42.86 owed for those 6 days of active membership, so your payment on the 29th is $7.15 instead of the usual $100. From the 29th onwards, you're back to your normal $100 every fortnight.

Important notes:
1. Your 12 weeks is a rolling allowance. We look back over the last 12 months and add up the pause you have already used. You're still welcome to cancel your account (Please note: accounts must be up to date and paid to be cancelled)
2. Attending a class while your membership is paused automatically resumes billing from that day

There are two common reasons. Your account may have an overdue payment, as pause and cancel options are hidden while a payment is outstanding. Or you may have used your full pause allowance, which is 12 weeks in any rolling 12-month period. If you have used all 12 weeks, you will need to wait until some of that time falls outside the last 12 months.

If neither of these applies to you, please email us and we will take a look.

No. Pauses apply to each individual membership. If you have more than one child enrolled, each membership must be paused separately by selecting their profile on the "Select an Account" page in the app.

As soon as you sign up. After signing up, you'll get an email with information about our member app, where you can change your billing date anytime.

No. We only offer fortnightly payments. If you would like to pay upfront, please email admin@tohkonryu.com. Upfront payments require a minimum 12-month payment.

You can change your billing date yourself at any time in the member app at https://app.tohkonryu.com. If you get stuck, email admin@tohkonryu.com and we will change it for you.

Yes. We offer family discounts for families with three or more students enrolled at the same time. Please email admin@tohkonryu.com to apply.

Our payment processor retries the charge automatically. Update your card in the member app at https://app.tohkonryu.com and the next retry will go through. If payments keep failing the account falls into arrears, and pause and cancel options are hidden until it is paid up.

Our minimum pause period is 1 week regardless of your membership type.

You can upgrade or downgrade your membership at any time using our member app at: https://app.tohkonryu.com/

You can pause for up to 12 weeks in total in any rolling 12-month period. If you need a longer break than that, we recommend cancelling your membership. Before you do, keep in mind that rejoining later means paying the sign-up fee again and losing any credits, coupons or legacy rates on your account.

You can pause or cancel your membership at any time using our member app at: https://app.tohkonryu.com/ If you cannot use the app, email admin@tohkonryu.com (30 days' notice applies to email requests).

No. While your membership is paused or after you cancel, it is inactive and training is not permitted. Attending a class while paused or after cancelling automatically resumes billing from that day.

Open the member app, go to Billing, and update your payment method.

Training

How we keep the mats safe and the classes good.

Log in to the Member App. Click Manage Your Account, select the student you would like to update, then click Edit Details to make changes.

Straight away. Once you have signed up, you can start at the next class that suits you. Kids classes run in school terms, so if you sign up during the holidays your child's first class will be in the first week of term.

Most membership changes, including pauses, cancellations and billing date changes, can be completed yourself in the member app, and answers to common questions can be found on our Help and House Rules page.

If you need help with anything the app cannot do, please email us at admin@tohkonryu.com. We usually respond within 24 hours. Email is our official, monitored support channel for all questions, concerns and requests. This ensures we can assist you as quickly as possible and make sure nothing gets missed.

Phone calls, text messages, voicemail, social media messages and requests made to staff in person are not official channels and may not receive a response.

This is because email:
- Can be seen by the whole team to assist you as fast as possible
- Works even if phone numbers change or staff are travelling so we don’t miss anything
- Allows us to respond to you early in the morning or late at night, for faster responses

Thank you for understanding!

Parents

For mums, dads and carers of our kids students.

Sometimes, yes. We'll usually consider it if your child is close to the age cut-off and has been training in the younger group for at least 2 years.
